The Trailways Building, long a cornerstone of the city of Chicago's South Loop redevelopment plans, has been restored and redeveloped for commercial use by Friedman Properties. Designed by Daniel Burnham protégé David Saul Klafter, the building served as the city’s main bus station until Greyhound moved to the corner of Lake and Clark streets in 1953. Long vacant, this signature structure of the South Loop is now open to new tenants, Sam's Wines and Spirits and Potbelly Sandwich Works.
The building's first-floor showroom features a signature selection of over 6,000 spirits from anchor tenant, Sam's Wines & Spirits. Other amenities include a gourmet grocery, 55-seat wine bar, and one of only two Dom Perignon champagne bars in the United States.
Friedman Properties worked with City of Chicago officials to save Trailways Building and transform it into an anchor of the booming Roosevelt Corridor. The building’s distinctive features have been carefully preserved, including the original terra cotta façade and graceful classical ornamentation. Friedman Properties also retained the grand staircase between the cellar and first floor as well as much of the original granite and marble flooring.

Description
The long vacant South Loop Trailways Building has recently been revived, adding prime retail space to the rapidly developing South Loop market. Located on the northeast corner of Wabash and Roosevelt across from the Roosevelt "el" stop, this redevelopment offers exceptional identity for tenants and unparalleled convenience for the consumer. The building is the new home of anchor tenant Sam's Wines & Spirits, the country's largest independent wine retailer. Sam's one-of-a-kind store features the retailer's signature selection of over 6,000 spirits, a 55-seat wine bar and a gourmet grocery store. Frequent customer appreciation events and co-tenant Potbelly Sandwich Works have quickly made the revitalized Trailways Building a shopping and social destination for South Loop residents.
