50 East Roosevelt Street
Located at the corner of Wabash and Roosevelt Roads, the Trailways building originally opened in 1928 as the Union Bus Depot and served as the city's main bus hub until early in the 1950s. The building's architect, Davis Saul Klafter, was a one-time office boy for Louis Sullivan and later worked for Burnham and Company and the offices of Jarvis Hunt.
In a model of public/private partnership, Friedman Properties worked closely with City of Chicago officials to save the structure and transform it into an anchor of the booming Roosevelt Road Corridor in the revitalized South Loop. The building's distinguishing characteristic features have been carefully preserved, including the original terra cotta façade and its distinctive classical ornamentation. Also retained is the grand staircase between the cellar and first floor and as well as portions of the original granite and marble flooring. The architect for the building renovation is Richard Mann of Cubellis MDGF.
